Homeschooling & Mental Health

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many families opted for homeschooling instead of the traditional, in-person classroom. Homeschooling can have great results for some students while others may face social, emotional, and mental challenges. So, how can these be turned into opportunities for the students who may be struggling?

Social opportunities

Kids are used to going to school and interacting with other students. A sudden transition into homeschooling may impact their opportunity to bond and connect with others. 

There are opportunities for your child to connect with other homeschooled students, such as sporting activities, music, or theater. Connect with families in your community to learn more about getting your student involved.

Anxiety and stress

The change from in-school to at-home learning may initially create a rise in anxiety or stress for your student. However, it may actually decrease their stress levels in the long-term. According to the Global Student Network, online homeschooling allows children to learn in a comfortable environment, which helps alleviate stress and anxiety. Another benefit of homeschooling is that students have greater control of their educational experience, inspiring both confidence and a sense of security.

Schedule disruption

Your student had an established routine of getting up, taking the school bus, having class at a certain time, et cetera. Now that they’re homeschooling, life happens and their schedule can be disrupted. While this may seem chaotic at first, it also gives you a chance to create your own schedule that works well for both you and your student. 

Some advantages to homeschooling include less rushing, getting enough sleep, taking breaks when needed, and getting a chance to learn with less pressure. If your student needs additional time on a subject, you can take it allowing them to get a better grasp and gain confidence and a stronger understanding. 

While there are ups and downs to a sudden transition from in-school to at-home school, it is important to prioritize your student’s mental health.
